Beard transplant surgery transfers healthy hair follicles from the donor zone at the back of the scalp to the beard area of the face. The result is permanent, natural-looking facial hair that can be trimmed, shaped and shaved exactly like a beard that grew there naturally.

At Hair Transplant Edinburgh, our surgeons perform beard transplants using FUE and DHI, the two techniques that give the most precise control over graft placement in facial tissue. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic on a day-patient basis at our clinic on George Street.

For patients also considering scalp procedures, we offer hairline hair transplant and crown hair transplant surgery at the same Edinburgh clinic. Our transgender hair transplant service also incorporates beard restoration for patients seeking facial hair as part of their transition.

Beard Transplant in Edinburgh

Men come to our Edinburgh clinic for beard restoration for a range of reasons. Some have patchy beard growth where follicles simply never developed in certain areas. Others have scarring from acne, injury or a previous procedure that left gaps in facial hair coverage. Some patients have lost beard hair following skin conditions or trauma. Others have always had naturally sparse facial hair and want to achieve a fuller, more even result.

Whatever the underlying reason, the goal is the same: to create coverage that looks like it was always there. Beard transplant results depend on careful graft placement, with each follicle positioned to match the natural direction and angle of the surrounding facial hair. This is one of the reasons technique selection matters, and why our surgeons take time at consultation to assess both the recipient zone and the available donor supply before making a recommendation.

FUE and DHI for Beard Restoration

Both FUE and DHI are used for beard transplantation at our Edinburgh clinic. The choice between them depends on the size of the area being treated and the precision required.

With FUE, the surgeon extracts individual follicular units from the donor area using a micro-punch, then creates small recipient sites in the beard zone before placing the grafts. This approach suits larger coverage areas such as full beard restoration or significant scarring across a wide zone.

DHI uses the Choi implanter pen to combine channel creation and graft placement in a single step, giving the surgeon very direct control over the angle and depth of each implanted follicle. For detailed work at the jawline, moustache area or in between existing hair where precision is critical, DHI offers a particular advantage. Your surgeon will set out which approach is most appropriate for your case at the consultation stage.

Neither technique requires general anaesthetic. The face and donor area are both numbed with local anaesthetic before surgery begins, and patients report feeling movement rather than pain during the procedure.

Who Is a Suitable Candidate?

The most important factor in candidacy is donor supply. Beard transplants draw grafts from the scalp, typically the back and sides where hair is most resistant to loss. If donor density is low, or if the donor area has already been used in a previous hair transplant procedure, the available graft count may be limited. Patients who have had a prior FUT procedure will have a linear scar in the donor zone, which your surgeon will factor into the extraction plan.

Good candidates generally have healthy scalp donor hair, a stable hair loss pattern, and a clear and realistic goal for the beard area they want to restore. Patients who smoke are usually advised to stop before surgery, as smoking affects circulation and can reduce follicle survival rates.

Age is less of a restriction for beard transplant than for scalp procedures, since beard hair loss patterns are generally more stable and predictable. Your surgeon will assess all relevant factors at your consultation and give you a clear view of what can be achieved.

Patients who are also considering scalp restoration or eyebrow transplant should discuss this at consultation. If both scalp and beard surgery are planned, the donor supply needs to accommodate both requirements, and the sequencing of procedures will be planned accordingly.

What to Expect from the Procedure and Recovery

A beard transplant session at our Edinburgh clinic typically takes between three and six hours depending on the number of grafts. Patients are awake throughout, resting comfortably under local anaesthetic.

In the days following surgery, small scabs form around each implantation site in the beard area. These resolve naturally within seven to ten days and should not be picked or disturbed. The donor area at the back of the scalp heals quickly, with extraction marks fading within two weeks.

The transplanted hairs shed during the first two to four weeks after surgery. This is a normal part of the process. The follicle remains intact beneath the skin, and new hair begins to grow from around three to four months post-procedure. Most patients see a clear result developing between six and nine months, with full density typically visible at twelve months.

Once grown, the transplanted beard hair behaves exactly like natural facial hair. It can be trimmed, shaved and styled without restriction. There is no maintenance regime required beyond normal grooming.

Beard Transplant Cost in Edinburgh

Beard transplant pricing depends on the number of grafts required, which in turn depends on the size and density of the area being treated. A small patch repair involves far fewer grafts than a full beard build from sparse coverage. For indicative pricing, our hair transplant cost Edinburgh sets out what to expect. A precise quote is provided after your free consultation, once your surgeon has assessed your donor zone and the recipient area.

FAQs

Yes, when performed correctly. The key to a natural result is accurate graft placement, with each follicle implanted at the correct angle, depth and direction to match the surrounding facial hair. Our Edinburgh surgeons plan the placement pattern carefully based on your existing facial hair growth and the result you want to achieve. The transplanted hair grows, sheds and regrows exactly like natural beard hair and can be trimmed and styled without restriction.

Donor follicles are taken from the back and sides of the scalp, where hair is most resistant to the hormonal effects that cause loss. The extraction is performed using FUE or DHI, meaning individual follicles are removed one by one rather than via a strip incision. The donor area heals quickly and extraction marks become undetectable within a few weeks once surrounding hair has grown back.

Most beard transplant procedures at our Edinburgh clinic take between three and six hours. The exact duration depends on the number of grafts being transplanted and the size of the recipient area. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic on a day-patient basis, meaning you arrive in the morning and return home the same day with no overnight stay required.

The transplanted hairs shed in the first two to four weeks after surgery, which is a normal part of the healing process. New growth begins emerging from around three to four months. Most patients see a clear result developing between six and nine months post-procedure, with full density typically visible at the twelve-month mark. The timeline is similar to scalp hair transplant recovery.

Yes. Scarring from acne, injury or previous procedures is one of the more common reasons patients seek beard transplant surgery. Grafts can be placed into and around scar tissue, though the survival rate of follicles in heavily scarred areas can be slightly lower than in unscarred skin. Your surgeon will assess the scar tissue at consultation and give you a realistic expectation of the coverage achievable.

Yes, but the sequencing and donor allocation need to be planned carefully. Both procedures draw grafts from the same scalp donor zone, so the total available supply must cover both requirements. If you are considering both scalp and beard restoration, raise this at your first consultation so your surgeon can plan accordingly. In some cases the procedures are staged to allow the donor area to recover between sessions.

It was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Naturally, I was unsure on which organisation to choose for the procedure, but HSHTC came across as professional and caring, as well as having a wide range of availability. There are negative reviews on all businesses, and this drives customers like myself away. However, something told me this would likely be someone with unrealistic expectations, or not reading into the procedure as a whole. I chose to ignore the negatives and read the positives. Sara the coordinator was absolutely amazing! She outlined everything and made it clear of what is expected and what is not. After a great consultation, I was passed to the next stage of meeting surgeon Dr Ditta. He presented extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he does, so I decided to go ahead with the procedure. The surgery day was expected to be a long, but rewarding day. It started with having to shave my head (mandatory requirement for this procedure). I’d say to anyone the thought is worser than the event, and to just do it for the positives that will follow. Dr Ditta and his team were extremely caring and sensitive, especially with briefing before any painful situations pre anaesthetic. After that, I was allowed to top up when requested and leave them to do what they do best. The day as a whole was enjoyable and interesting to speak to the team to learn more about the procedure and get to know them. Lunch was provided (yay). It was lovely of them to offer, and you definitely need to eat mid procedure to keep energy levels. At the end of the day, I was given clear instruction of how to have the best success rate. It was through a video and in person. If you have questions, ask as it’s what the team is there for. The first few days of recovery can be quite awkward and uncomfortable, but I’d recommend booking 2 weeks off work to fully recover and let the grafts set. Once you get use to the sleeping situation, it’s easy and a lovely break from reality (put pillows below your knees and stack below head for pure comfort!). The aftercare products was extremely useful and easy to use. The grafts will fall out after a few weeks, it’s expected and you’re told this plenty of times!! Having a healthy lifestyle makes your hair grow quicker and thicker, so swap your diet to good healthy hair foods. When your transplanted hair grows back, it’s an amazing feeling, but only the beginning. As the months pass by, you’ll notice a massive improvement. During this process, you’ll have regular aftercare and the chance to raise any concerns. I personally didn’t have any issues and was just grateful to still be in contact and told everything is going as it should. I’m 6 months post surgery and I’m seeing the benefits hugely, and it’s not even reached maximum results yet, as this is one year. Thanks for an amazing service!

Having given some time and thought about having a Hair Transplant, I contacted Harley street hair transplant clinics. The consultant (Sara) explained everything regarding the procedure with Dr.Ditta and the technicians. From the beginning, Dr.Ditta explained the days events and how the procedures would be done beginning with taking a photo of my head and showing me where the grafts would be taken from and where they would be placed. The procedures would be done and completed in two parts, with a lunch break in between. Once completed, Dr.Ditta went through the aftercare, explaining what to do each day for 10 days. I was given capsules, shampoo, sponge, neck pillow for sleeping with and information regarding how to look after my hair. Dr. Ditta and his team were welcoming and friendly ensuring I was looked after throughout both parts of the procedure. Sara maintained regular contact to make sure recovery was going well. The results were great, patience is needed as the grafts start to grow, and then you can see the results. Extremely happy with everything, from start to finish.

Overall, my experience at the clinic was positive. Dr. Ditta was exceptional — he made me feel comfortable and at ease throughout the procedure, and his professionalism was truly reassuring. However, I was disappointed with one member of the team who, in my opinion, did not fully follow health and safety protocols. She had her hair down without a surgical cap and was using her phone while wearing gloves, then proceeded to touch my hair without changing them. This raised concerns about hygiene and cross-contamination. Her manner was also not very pleasant, which made the experience less comfortable. Although I was initially worried about the risk of infection, I felt more at ease by the end of my visit. I hope the management reviews this matter to ensure that strict hygiene and professional standards are consistently maintained. Aside from this, I was very satisfied with Dr. Ditta’s care and look forward to seeing my results.

Dear Team. Following my hair transplant last Saturday I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the team, for making my journey as pleasant as possible. From the first consultation, to having my hotel booked, to the procedure itself, I couldn’t have been more impressed. Finally a big thank you to Doctor Ditta and the team, who were so kind when I felt unwell, making me drinking chocolate and reassuring me throughout the process. Add to this, their expertise and professionalism, what more can one ask for? I look forward to the final part of my hair transplant next year. Once again a big thanks to you all. Kind regards Keith Yates

Before the procedure I had online and face to face consultations with no obligations. These gave me all the information I needed and really put me at ease and gave me the confidence to proceed. Everyone was really knowledgeable and friendly and clearly very experienced. Booking the procedure was quick and easy and I got a date that suited me. The procedure itself went really smoothly I was able to put headphones in and listen to podcasts and was very comfortable. Afterwards I was given really detailed notes on what to do and what would happen and everything went exactly as planned. It was so reassuring knowing that advice was only a text message away and responses were always immediate. I'm two weeks post procedure now and everything has gone back to normal and the recovery is going just as planned. I'm so glad I did this and chose Harley Street Hair Transplant!

Great clinic with friendly and experienced team. I wanted my surgery done in the UK and found the clinic on Google. Process started with virtual consultations with patient advisor and then with the surgeon. FULL costs were given up front, with good finance options available. On the day I designed a new hairline with the surgeon and ended up getting about 1600 grafts iirc, which was good value for money. Clear pre- and post-op instructions given and recovery has gone as expected. Now waiting patiently for regrowth :) - Grant
